Wal-Mart, the largest food retailer in the United States, has launched a new campaign to start providing healthier foods.
The plan is to offer healthy foods but maintain the low prices.
Wal-Mart developed this plan, which will be presented to health officials in Washington, as Michelle Obama, first lady, works to prevent childhood obesity.
While several rural locations currently have various healthy food choices at Wal-Mart, the goal is to provide the same food options for larger urban areas like Chicago and New York.
In order to achieve a healthier variety of food, lower quantities of sugar, fat, and salt will be used in many packaged products. Additionally, Wal-Mart plans to lower prices on various produce items.
Due to the size of Wal-Mart, this healthy change may drastically impact the way competitors market foods as well. On top of that, suppliers will be forced to follow new guidelines by Wal-Mart, as they determine whether or not they will sell supplier’s food in stores.
Experts believe this is a giant step in the right direction to help make America more healthy and to help decrease childhood obesity.
