With the recent banning of alcoholic energy drink Four Loko, the underground market is booming.
Many people are turning to sites like Craigslist to buy and sell the now illegal drink. The unfortunate ones, like three women in New Jersey, are being charged with illegal beverage sales.
Attempting to make nearly $350, the women were trying to sell three cases of Four Loko. The asking price was more than twice the original retail price of the beverage.
Posing as college students, undercover police charged the women for selling alcohol with a license, a fourth-degree charge.
The original Four Loko product contained alcohol, guarana, taurine, and caffeine — hence “four”.
Caffeine, a stimulant, acts as an artificial adrenaline rush for the body while alcohol serves as a depressant. When mixed, however, the effects do not cancel each other out.
New versions of the beverage no longer contain caffeine as the potent mixture of alcohol and caffeine was said to be unsafe by the Food and Drug Administration.
